fashion and accessories between the 1500's and today.  Ribbonwork has always been used among the elite.  The onset of this fashion accessory did not begin with the French or the English in the 1800's but actually with the Spaniard elites, in the 1500's and primarily by the men.  Adapted later by the French and English in the 1800's, this phenominon of fashion was always evolving and adapting to the changing times.  The lapse of it's popularity was attributed to the economic state of the country and sometimes on account of "taming" the overtly immoral sense of outlandish spending.
